LOCATION - Irrigation and Soils
The Kafue river, north of Mpongwe is a great source of water. Farms could be established near this river, where there is a lot of flat, empty and green land. Water tanks could be regularly filled and used to water the crops and to give to the people running the farms. As people may not be willing to help out on the farms they would receive regular payments of money, food and water. This would help reduce the amount of undernourished people drastically. Crops such as sweet potatoes, beans, nuts, cowpeas, wheat and potatoes can be grown easily in this climate and soil.
GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THE LAND
One of Zambia’s biggest problems of why they have such a high percentage of their population being undernourished (12.9%) and hungry (48%) is because they are not being productive with the arable land throughout the country. There is more than 70% of the arable land throughout Zambia that has not yet been cultivated and when it is cultivated, Zambia will have a much larger food source. This will help the country grow and become more sustainable which in time will be a great step for the country itself pushing Zambia to industrialize.
How this will be a great step for Zambia as a nation is that there will become many more jobs for the Zambians and the country can start exporting the food to other countries. This will be a great money maker and in doing this the country will thrive.
Soil quality- Even though different soils have some properties that cannot be changed, such as texture, soil quality can be improved by implementing good management strategies. Soils can be improved for water holding capacity, drainage, structure, and even the ability for plant roots to penetrate through the soil. One of the only ways to improve soil quality is organic matter can improve soil quality. Of all the components of soil, organic matter is probably the most important and most misunderstood. Organic matter serves as a reservoir of nutrients and water in the soil, aids in reducing compaction and surface crusting, and increases water infiltration into the soil. Any soil, no matter how compacted, can be improved through the addition of organic matter. The result will be a better environment for almost any kind of plant.
TRANSPORTATION OF FOOD
The transportation of the food from one community to another is a very important process for the people living throughout Zambia and could eventually become the transport between Zambia and other countries. This will allow a bigger variety of foods for the Zambians in the many different communities throughout Zambia, changing the lifestyles and making the Zambians live longer and healthier lives. The transportation can only become better if Zambia’s Government make agriculture an importance in the economy, even if it means to lower the importance of the mining.
